ASTM F1554 — Baden Steelbar & Bolt Corp. (2024)

F1554 is the ASTM International specification for anchor bolts Until the ASTM F1554 specification was introduced anchor bolts did not have a specification of their own. They were most commonly specified under ASTM A307 (Carbon Steel Bolts and Studs), or simply as ASTM A36 (actually a material specification, not a bolt specification).

Three grades are covered under F1554.

We stock many sizes with a hot-dip galvanized finish.

Supplementary Testing

Supplementary requirements shall apply only when specified in the purchase order or contract.

S1: Weldable version of the Grade 55 specification. Through chemical composition restrictions and by a carbon equivalency formula, S1 provides assurance of weldability. When S1 is not specified, the Grade 55 material may or may not be weldable.

S2: Permanent manufacturer’s identification on the end of the anchor bolt that projects from the concrete, in lieu of color coding.

S3: Permanent grade identification on the end of the anchor bolt that projects from the concrete, in lieu of color coding.

S4: Charpy Impact requirements at +40⁰F (+5⁰C) for grades 55 and 105. The minimum Charpy V-notch energy requirement is an average of 15ft-lbs for three specimens, with no one specimen falling below 12ft-lbs.

S5: Charpy Impact requirements at -20⁰F (-29⁰C) for grade 105. The minimum Charpy V-notch energy requirement is an average of 15ft-lbs for three specimens, with no one specimen falling below 12ft-lbs.

TIPS & FAQ:

Remember, when specifying F1554 the specification alone is not enough information. There are three grade classifications contained in the F1554 specification; grade 36, grade 55 and grade 105.

Q: Can I weld to a F1554 anchor bolt?

A: The answer is dependent upon the grade of the anchor bolt.

Grade 36 - Yes

Grade 55 - You can only be sure of welding compatibility if the grade 55 anchor bolt is supplied with the "S1" supplementary requirement (see chart above).

Grade 105 - No, these anchor bolts are a heat-treated, medium carbon alloy steel and therefore are not considered weldable. We regularly receive drawings incorrectly specifying hex nuts be installed and tack welded in place on grade 105 anchor bolts. This is not considered acceptable as it may result in brittleness and/or modification of the strength of the actual anchor bolt.

FAQs

What is ASTM F1554 equivalent to? ›

ASTM F1554 covers hooked, headed, and threaded and nutted anchor rods in three strength grades: 36, 55 and 105. ASTM F1554 grades 36, 55 and 105 are essentially the anchor- rod equivalents of the generic rod specifications ASTM A36, ASTM A572 grade 55 and A193 grade B7, respectively.

What is the ASTM standard F1554? ›

In summary, ASTM F1554 is a critical standard that provides a comprehensive framework for the specification of anchor bolts used in construction. It outlines the requirements for three distinct grades of anchor bolts, each defined by its minimum yield strength: Grade 36, Grade 55, and Grade 105.

What is the difference between F1554 and A36? ›

ASTM A36 is a material specification for carbon structural steel. ASTM F1554-36 is fastener specification. The two most common fastener specifications for carbon steel threaded rod are ASTM A307A and ASTM F1554-36. Both require that the threaded rod or stud meet the minimum tensile requirements of A36.

What is ASTM F1554 Grade 105 hardness? ›

F1554 Grade 105 is a heat-treated alloy steel bar. It has a 105 ksi yield strength, good fatigue and impact resistance, which is required by the F1554 specification for anchor bolt and fastener applications.

Is ASTM F1554 stainless steel? ›

Do F1554 anchor bolts come in stainless steel? The answer to this question is no.

What is the difference between ASTM and SAE bolts? ›

While similar in function to ASTM, it is the scope of their standards that is different. SAE has a more narrowly focused range of standards. Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) tend to use more bolts manufactured to SAE standards than ASTM specifications.

What grade steel is used for anchor bolts? ›

The most common grades used for anchor bolts are the high strength alloy steel grade L7 and the stainless steel grades B8 and B8M. Grade L7 anchor bolts require a Charpy test at -150 degrees Fahrenheit. This ASTM specification covers hot-dip galvanizing of bolts, nuts, washers, and other threaded parts.

Can F1554 grade 105 be galvanized? ›

F1554 grade 105 bolts can be galvanized even though they are relatively high in strength. The galvanizing does not affect the mechanical properties of the anchor bolt and will not cause hydrogen embrittlement.

What grade of bolt is the most commonly used ASTM? ›

A193 Grade B7 is the most commonly used Bolt specification coupled with A194 Grade 2H Nuts for Bolting Carbon Steel pipeline. A193 B7 bolting is available in metric sizes from M6 to M180 and imperial sizes from 1/4 to 7 inches, in diameter.

What is the ASTM equivalent of A36 steel? ›

ASTM A36 steel plates will have a lot of equivalent materials, such as A283C, FE360B, E24-2, Chinese material Q235B, Japan material SS400 and SM400A, European material EN S235JR, Germany material DIN ST37-2, etc.

What is the equivalent of A36 bolts? ›

ASTM F1554 grade 36 anchor bolts are manufactured from A36, low carbon steel. This is your standard, run-of-the-mill bolt grade covering anchor bolts in diameters ranging from 1/2″ through 4″. In August of 2007, F1554 grade 36 replaced ASTM A307 grade C which also covered mild steel anchor bolts.

What grade bolt is A36? ›

A36 is a ASTM International specification for carbon steel.

It is used in riveted, bolted or welded construction of bridges, buildings and for general structural purposes.

What material is ASTM F1554 equivalent to? ›

F1554 Grade 105:

105 Alloy, heat treated, high strength 105 ksi yield steel anchor bolts. Roughly equivalent to a SAE Grade 5 Bolt or ASTM A449, A325, A354 Grade BC, A193 B7.

What is ASTM F1554 grade 105 equivalent to? ›

Although there are three different grades of F1554 anchor bolts, Grade 105 is very similar in both chemistry and strength to A193 Grade B7. Therefore, F1554 Grade 105 may be a more appropriate specification for engineers designing anchor bolts but looking for similar strength and chemical properties as A193 Grade B7.

What does ASTM F1554 mean? ›

ASTM F1554 is the newest construction fastener specification developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials and covers steel anchor bolts intended for anchoring structural supports to concrete foundations.

What is the ASTM equivalent of Grade 8 steel? ›

A grade 8 bolt is the highest grade SAE bolt. Grade 8 bolts have a minimum tensile strength of 150,000 PSI. As a comparison, the ASTM A325 bolt is roughly equivalent to the SAE grade 5. A grade 8 bolt would be one that meets ASTM A490 standards.

What ASTM is P 235 GH equivalent to? ›

Equivalent Astm Material is A285 Grade C.

What is the difference between ASTM A449 and F1554? ›

A449 is an appropriate anchor bolt specification when a project requires a bolt to be stronger than F1554 Grade 55 and not as strong as F1554 Grade 105. Portland Bolt is able to manufacture headed anchor bolts in ASTM A449.
