The past couple of years didn't go exactly according to design when it came to releasing superhero movies, but then again, neither did the good guys' plan at the end of Avengers: Infinity War. And you know what they did? They tried again! Now, in this not very great year of 2022, we once again have more superhero films on the docket than we know what to do with.
Thanks to the multiverse, dates have still been shifting and reappearing on our timeline constantly, but what's been teased for the future feels well worth the wait. We'll return to the world of Wakanda for Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in November. Meanwhile, DC will also expand its Shazam! universe by introducing a new villain in Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson's Black Adam this October, and then following it up with the official Shazam! Fury of the Gods sequel in March 2023.
See the full list of upcoming superhero movies from Marvel, Sony, and DC below.
Black Adam
Release Date: October 21, 2022
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, DC’s newest standalone follows Shazam’s archenemy, the antihero Black Adam. It’s unclear whether the film, arriving after 2019’s Shazam and just before its 2022 sequel, will advance plot details within the collective DC cinematic universe. Rest assured, we already have a fan-favorite hero in Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone.
Black Panther: Wakanda Forever
Release Date: November 11, 2022
Black Panther is getting a sequel, yes, and it's going to include another killer soundtrack. Aside from the maybe-villain of the film in Namor, most of the details are up in the air, especially after Chadwick Boseman's passing. Judging by the film's first trailer, though Marvel and director Ryan Coogler won't shy away from the grief.
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania
Release Date: February 17, 2023
Peyton Reed will return to direct the third Ant-Man movie. The cast includes Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michelle Pfeiffer, Kathryn Newton, and Jonathan Majors' Kang the Conqueror character from Loki.
Shazam! Fury of the Gods
Release Date: March 17, 2023
Though DC’s Shazam cinematic universe is expanding, the details of Shazam! Fury of the Gods are still fairly under wraps. Leading man Zachary Levi is set to return along with director David Sandberg, while rumors are still swirling that Henry Cavill will return as Superman. Word on the street has it that there will also be an appearance from Dwayne Johnson's Black Adam.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
Release Date: May 5, 2023
After being briefly removed from the project, James Gunn will return to direct the third Guardians of the Galaxy movie. Black Mirror: Bandersnatch and Dopesick star Will Poulter will star as Adam Warlock, a powerful being and a much-anticipated addition for fans of the comics.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Part One)
Release Date: June 2, 2023
Following up the massive success of 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse computer-animated superhero flick, Across the Spider-Verse expects to build the world out even further—so much so that it can't be contained to just one film! Moon Knight's Oscar Isaac joins the voice cast as Miguel O'Hara, a Spider-Man from the year 2099, and Insecure's Issa Rae will voice Jessica Drew, another Spider-Woman.
The Flash
Release Date: June 23, 2023
After some feet-dragging in development, The Flash is marked and set for the screen under the direction of It and It 2 director Andy Muschietti. Despite some troubling allegations as of late, Ezra Miller will star as hero Barry Allen alongside Michael Keaton, reprising their role as Bruce Wayne from 1989's Batman and 1992's Batman Returns.
The Marvels
Release Date: July 28, 2023
This sequel to Captain Marvel will be directed by Candyman's Nia DaCosta and written by Megan McDonnell, who also penned WandaVision. Cosmic energy wielders Captain Marvel (Brie Larson), Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) will meet for the first time, as a follow-up to Captain Marvel and the Ms. Marvel Disney+ series that introduced audiences to the new teenage hero from Jersey City.
Kraven the Hunter
Release Date: October 6, 2023
Not much is known about Sony's next entry into their Spider-Man villain origin universe, but the studio will follow Venom 2 and Morbius with Kraven the Hunter. Aaron Taylor-Johnson will star as the titular, Russian big-game expert, alongside unspecified roles for Christopher Abbott, Russell Crowe, and Ariana DeBose.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom
Release Date: December 25, 2023
Returning as Arthur Curry, the king of Atlantis, Jason Momoa will take to the seas once again in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. Amber Heard (maybe), Willem Dafoe, and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II will reprise their roles as well, along with director James Wan.
El Muerto
Release Date: January 12, 2024
Listen, we're excited about the Bad Bunny superhero movie. That's a fact. We'd rather Bad Bunny just play a super-powered Bad Bunny—instead of a wrestler in a Sony-verse film—but hey, can't always get what you want.
Madame Web
Release Date: February 16, 2024
2024 will see even more Sony-verse action after Kraven the Hunter. The likes of Dakota Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, and Adam Scott will team up in a film about the obscure Spider-Man adversary. All we want to know is when Spidey will finally show up in one of these jams.
Captain America: New World Order
Release Date: May 3, 2024
Whether or not you liked The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, the story is 100 percent continuing. Captain America: New World Order will star the always-delightful duo of Anthony Mackie and Sebastian Stan, as Sam Wilson and Bucky Barnes, respectively.
Thunderbolts
Release Date: July 26, 2024
You knew that there would always be a bad Avengers, right? We're surprised it took this long. In Marvel's comic books, a group called the Thunderbolts showed up, promising to be an Avengers-esque gaggle of heroes. Guess what? They're villains! Didn't see that one coming. Wyatt Russell's John Walker and Florence Pugh's Yelena Belova will likely show up in this dark-sided adventure.
Blade
Release Date: September 6, 2024
Mahershala Ali will star in the reboot of the Blade franchise, which last ended with 2004's Blade: Trinity starring Wesley Snipes. Bassam Tariq, who directed 2020's Mogul Mowgli, has unfortunately left the project. Disney has halted the film's production to search for a new director as fans eagerly await to hear how the vampire hunter will fit into Marvel's Cinematic Universe.
Deadpool 3
Release Date: November 8, 2024
Deadpool's third film and presumed first outing as part of the official MCU will also feature Hugh Jackman's return as Wolverine. Sure, he may have died at the end of Logan, but who cares! Here's back, bub, and so are the laughs.
Fantastic Four
Release Date: February 14, 2025
After a reboot we'd rather not talk about, the rights to tell the story of Marvel's first family are finally back in the hands of, you know, Marvel. Let's just hope Sir Feige the Great does right by the likes of Sue and Reed Richards, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm.
Avengers: The Kang Dynasty
Release Date: May 2, 2025
We've long known that Jonathan Majors's Kang the Conquerer would be the next Big Bad of the MCU, and now, the is dude getting an Avengers flick with his name on it. This Kang guy is really moving up in the world. Wonder what his deal is!
Avengers: Secret Wars
Release Date: May 1, 2026
Well, there you have it, folks. The beloved Secret Wars comic series is finally a go. There have been multiple versions of said storyline, but we prefer the one where all the heroes have to go to a place called Battleworld (!) and beat the snot out of each other.
